Dear Leadership of the International Churches of Christ

We were honored as the leadership group of the Kiev Church to be chosen 2 years ago to host the 2008 International Leadership Conference (ILC). The ILC has played a key role in our fellowship staying together as we have sought out a new dynamic of churches working together to accomplish God’s will for the nations we live in. The ILC has been hosted in Dallas, Chicago, Seattle, Hampton Roads and Los Angeles. While in Hampton Roads, 70 delegates discussed and voted on the site of Kiev for this year's conference. The delegates were inspired by the opportunity to host a conference that would take our leaders to a 3rd world country and conduct a conference more accessible to those who do not live in the USA. Last year in Los Angeles about 100 leaders from outside the USA attended. This year already more than 600 outside of the US are registered for the ILC, most coming from 3rd world countries.

As exciting as this is for the increased international participation, we have entered into the reality that this year's participation from the first world is not substantial enough to successfully host the conference. Several things have contributed to this short fall. The cost of oil and airfare has more than doubled since we chose Kiev as the ILC site. The challenging economic times across the country and world have brought a strain on the budgets of the churches. This of course was not possible to predict in 2006. We sent out an Attendance Survey last March through Disciples Today to see if we would have enough attendance to break even. The number of people predicted to come would have put us close to break even. The Kiev disciples are all paying a registration fee to help make the budget.

At this time we only have 265 first world registrants. In reality, only half of those that were predicted to come on the survey have actually registered. Once again, we are sure this is a result of the financial challenges in our churches.

With these facts, it has become clear that this conference is over budget by $70,000. This would be on top of the fact that Kiev is actually already paying for the Sunday service portion of all the costs of the conference. As you can imagine, this deficit amount is way beyond the means of the Kiev Church. This sum in our third world setting is the equivalent of $350,000 in the USA.

We are asking for all of us to band together as brothers to figure out how to raise this money in order to have a successful conference. The Kiev church is asking for your help, so that we can host this years ILC with financial responsibility.

As we realize that everyone is stretched and finances are tight, we don’t actually recommend a push for more people to come. We are asking that you give whatever you can. Here are three suggestions:
  1. Your church contribute extra registration fees. If you spend $2500 to send one person – it will only reduce the debt of $70,000 by $200. But if you donate $1000, you have reduced our debt by $1,000. If several churches send in $600, $1000, $2000, $5,000, we can spread this situation out amongst all the churches. Thus all of us taking a small hit – so that our fellowship – may participate in the ILC.
  2. You may even have someone that was planning to go to the conference and now cannot. If no one has taken their place, possibly, you can send an contribution equal to the budget for that person's expenses. That could be $2,500. Anything you send would help out tremendously.
  3. Donate registration costs for those who could not attend. Another way we can help spread out some of this cost, is for churches who had suggested a certain number on our Attendance Survey, which we then used to set a budget, but were later unable to send that suggested number of leaders, Please consider sending in the registration costs for those who will not attend. We realize this is a sacrifice, and we realize that you are not obligated. We just ask as one of your sister churches in the 3rd world, who is doing its best to host our international fellowship, in challenging economic times.
Thank you for your generosity and understanding,

We pray the conference will spur our fellowship on to bringing God more Glory!

The Kiev Church of Christ is making history October 10 - 12. For the first time this century, the ICOC International Leadership Conference (ILC) is being held outside the USA. For the first time ever, the ILC is being held in a non-English speaking country. And for the first time ever, you will be able to attend the conference live over the internet! We will also host the replays of the broadcasts for future use.  Leaders who cannot make the trip to Kiev can get together with others and attend online! If you have always wanted to attend, here is your chance. Gather your family, family group, Bible Talk, house church or whatever group together. Join in the worship and be inspired by the messages. Click Here for the webcast.
